Medina Triennial Hub
Objects Of Affection

Maintenance is an act of continuous care, where people
retain, preserve, and sustain. This is true for memories as much as for
buildings, infrastructure, the environment, or furniture – the historical
everyday places and objects that come into existence, interact with our lives,
and endure over time. As a manifestation of this philosophy, Objects of
Affection is a family of flexible furniture fabricated from locally-sourced,
recycled and sustainable materials designed for the Medina Triennial Hub in
Medina, New York for its inaugural Medina Triennial. Sited halfway between
Buffalo and Rochester, the Hub is part of a larger arts initiative to
revitalize rust-belt cities along the Erie Canal.

The project partnered Serweta Peck with the University at Buffalo undergraduate and graduate architecture students, faculty, and staff, the Medina Triennial
curatorial team, New York Power Authority (NYPA) and the Canal Corporation to
design and build furniture, as well as an approximately 2,000 SF cultural
center. Located in the heart of Medina’s historic downtown and next to the
canal, the contemporary arts festival, which will run from June to September
2026, will bring 35 artists and collectives from around the world to create
site-responsive works of art and participate in public programs.

Through hands-on research, collaborative discussions,
experimentation, prototyping, and fabrication, the project team created a
family of flexible objects that can adapt to a wide variety of activities in
the Hub for community gatherings, artist workshops, talks and screenings, as
well as provide an anchor point for visitors, staff and artists-in-residence.

Most notably, NYPA donated seven 200-year-old pieces of
salvaged oak lumber, each measuring 17 feet long and weighing 850 pounds, that were
previously submerged as part of the construction of the Erie Canal lock system,
sourced from a lock yard close to the site. All the salvaged lumber was
processed by the project team at the university’s facilities using a saw-mill, planar machines, table
saws, and various power tools. The wood’s natural knots and cracks were
celebrated as details and minimally repaired using bio-resin and sawdust.

Using the color palette provided by the graphic designers,

Serweta Peck’s design had the Hub’s floor and walls epoxy painted with a 15-inch teal-colored “flood line” (in reference to
the “Fifteen Years on the Erie Canal” folk song) to evoke the rising waters of
the nearby canal via its lock system, as well as reference the global effects
of climate change. It also provided a unifying ground to tie together the
diverse Objects.

Objects of Affection invites and
encourages everyday citizens to take material steps to help maintain the spaces
and things that we visit, inhabit and love.

Reset: Towards a New Commons

Reset: Towards a New Commons explores how architecture can take a proactive role in creating more inclusive, diverse, and dynamic communities across the United States.

Drawing upon this idea of community and taking inspiration from the neighborly cooperation of line-drying laundry between apartment buildings in New York, the storefront’s double-height space becomes a sample display of the exhibition’s content hung at all levels, democratizing viewing attention to all parts of the exhibit from inside at the mezzanine and ground floor to outside on the street.

In the mezzanine space below is the exhibit’s Reading Room, featuring wheel-chair accessible nesting tables and sittable shelving furniture that allow flexibility for different individual and group activities. The walls are painted high-contrast colors, which serve as visual links back to each of the four teams’ work, while bold magenta highlights serve as the underlying thread tying everything together.

MEP / RCP Summer House

In the pursuit of an endless summer, a house with man-made weather brought to you by heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) can go well beyond the well-tempered environment to provide an architecture without the matter of modernity, such as a physical roof, walls and a floor. Instead: the pursuit is one of the primordial – the perfectly mutable and invisible features of air, electricity, and water to mold a state of permanent solstice. All that’s solid melts into aircon, a plethora of ductwork and pipes become the visible conduit of controlled lightning and synthetic wind, defining spaces through mechanical breaths and bubbles of warmth and cool. Strip away the drywall and you get the honesty of contemporary living: metal lungs and PVC nerves permanently pulsating to provide a pillow of comfort. Ready-made / object-oriented building techniques and an army of acronyms and symbols developed by mechanical engineers (PHX, RFM, FTR, DTW, EAT, CDP, BTU…) define the domestic limits of living dangerously comfortable (or comfortably dangerous). The beach is your bedroom. The jungle is the parlor. Everywhere is the orangery. You are poolside forever.

Constellation House

This 1,800 SF house is sited on top of a private wooded mountain in Hudson Valley, New York. Upon approach, the charred cedar-clad roofline takes on the appearance of peaks and valleys of a blackened mountain range.

The residential massing splays across a clearing before an elevation drop – to create a constellation of spaces, each with its own unique view of the expansive 270° panorama across the forested dale below.

The volumes intersect at corners to create pinch points of privacy between the living-dining space and the bedrooms, eschewing corridors for pivot doors. A separate cluster contains a private study and carport, which can be later converted into an independent guest house.

The client requested that there be only one floor level – no stairs, no slopes, no ramps – to future-proof the house for easier elderly use. However, they intreated for ceiling pitches to be dynamic with unexpected window placements to allow for incidental beams of light through the forest canopy into the rooms and framed serene views of the sky throughout the day.

The majority of the interiors oscillate between neutral white walls for art and tchotchkes, and white oak-clad counters, closets, and cabinetry that telegraph additional functions for either as storage, a kitchen, reading nook, or workspace. The ensuite bathrooms have their own one-off material wrapping, onyx penny tile and cedarwood, with floor-level windows to create the impression of uninterrupted connection between inside and outside.

Sway Pavilion

Sway Pavilion is an ephemeral work – both light in spirit and form. The aim is to create as little as possible. To strive towards nothing from space, not something in space. Crafted from readymade materials and easy to assemble, this proto architecture is stripped bare to an absolute minimum of elements. It simply consists of two planes, one of which floats, tenuously joined to four columns that bend and twist with the wind. A thermal blanket at the base captures light from above, thereby turning the ground into the sky, whilst simultaneously reflecting upwards the dappled light beneath its roof.

Individual space for occupation, defined by a 4 × 4-foot plane elevated ten feet in the air, provides room for passive activities like sitting, reading, meditation, eating and drinking tea. Its openness allows for a friend or even a passerby to join and partake. The lack of walls or any other vertical barriers blur spheres between personal and public space. Complete exposure to natural elements and elongated form (of almost absurd proportions) collapses any Renaissance notion of architecture’s utilitas (utility).
Like the cherry blossom’s quick blooming season, Sway Pavilion has a fleeting nature of existence, though it is also capable of renewal and revival in a new location. Its temporal and temporary nature are a given with no permission needed, the structure was disassembled almost as soon as it was erected to make way for a children’s birthday party, for a family who also wanted to enjoy the blossoms of the cherry tree.

Mello Spa

This 3,000 SF spa in Buffalo, New York, reimagines a historic warehouse once used by food merchants as a tropical oasis and multi-sensory space of healing for massage and movement, hydrotherapy, and enjoyment of a creative café.

Responding to the client’s desire to create a feeling of relaxation, rejuvenation, and flexibility, a minimal curtain rod system was designed to accommodate different-sized and types of programs at the center of the room. This includes a sound lounge with zero-gravity seating, massage beds, and movement therapy sessions. Gender-neutral restrooms and individual changing stations decorated with bespoke curtains also aim to enhance an environment of inclusivity and focus on well-being.

Warm tones and rough textures of the existing terracotta bricks, steel beams and wood ceiling contrast the filleted edges of the bays enclosing the communal shower, sauna and staff/storage area located at the periphery. A cold plunge and three jacuzzi-style hot tubs offer guests a verdant hydrotherapy experience. Intimate spaces, such as a reading nook with a kotatsu, also provide a place for repose and sanctuary.

Flying Eaves House

Nestled in the wilderness of Marfa, Texas, Flying Eaves House (2,375 sf) is a studio retreat for a graphic designer. Its conception oscillates between binaries of Eastern and Western cultures, curving and regular geometries, and ancient and contemporary practices.

The terracotta roofscape with its deep wood-framed eaves and square courtyard are primarily inspired by the minimalist aesthetic of the conceptual artist Donald Judd and traditional sìhéyuàn houses. Its low, swooping profile seeks to mimic its flat surrounds and mountainous horizon. Rainbow-colored rammed earth made from local sediments define the perimeter walls, providing thermal comfort and a tactile, visual connection to the site.

Like the sìhéyuàn, the four wings of the house are organized on a gradient of public to private, from the workshop and study – to the living and dining areas – and to the sleeping quarters. Thresholds are flanked by built-in storage and service spaces are accented using stained plywood as shadow walls (yǐngbì) for privacy and visual contrast. Each space spills out into the heart of the home – a courtyard with a reflection pool, patio, and contemplative garden planted with Chihuahuan wild grasses and other indigenous desert flora.
