[Re]Assemble

[Re]Assemble pays homage to the long history of the Grove and process of urban development in Allston. Fifty years ago, the site now referred to as Barry’s Corner was once home to 71 families, whose houses were eventually demolished or relocated after a battle over eminent domain. While no physical traces of this contentious past remain, its history still resides in the fragmented recollections of those who once lived there and in archived materials. [Re]assemble seeks to understand its own place within the Grove and questions the role of placemaking, public art, and interventions within the context of urban renewal.

Constructed from 71 identical units, each of which is labeled with the names of the families displaced in the 1960s, [Re]Assemble offers a platform for a diverse range of community events throughout the year. Each event is an invitation to members to share their narratives and histories, creating an inclusive and multi-modal investigation into Allston’s storied past and unfolding future.
